My Family Tree

First Generation

Benjamin Kirker Jr.

One of many in the Kirker clan to bear this name, this Ben Kirker is the one who purchased the land along the St. Lawrence waterfront where our cottage was built. He had four children: Laura, William Benjamin, Margaret and Effie Deborah. His wife died relatively young and his oldest daughter Laura helped raise the children.

Second Generation

Laura Kirker Edwards

She was the eldest child and raised the others after their mother’s death. Laura married Arthur Edwards who became a wealthy and successful businessman in Rochester, NY, owning many commercial properties in Rochester and nearby Brighton. They had one child. In the summer, the women and children were sent off to the cottages for a good part of the summer while the men stayed at home and worked. When my Grandfather was a boy, sometimes Arthur’s chauffeur would drive him, his mother, and others in the family up in Arthur’s big car, a Marmon. The trip was a day long affair during which they stopped for a picnic lunch and took the ferry from Alex Bay to Rockport.

William Benjamin Kirker

He was a stockbroker. Ben’s wife was named Janet Elizabeth, who went by "Nettie." They had a couple of children. After Ben died, Nettie still stayed at her cottage. She entertained a number of her children’s friends and their families.

Margaret Mae Kirker Cross

My Great-Grandmother. She married William Cross and had one child. Will Cross was born in 1882 and Margaret was a few years older than he. She died November 15, 1946.

Effie Deborah Kirker Goodhue

She married Bertrand Goodhue. Bert was a butcher who worked for one of the Rochester grocery store chains. They lived in the Bull's Head section of Rochester. They had three children. Effie died on January 6, 1957 and Bert on March 21, 1957. They are buried near my grandparent's graves in White Haven Cemetery, Pittsford, NY.

Third Generation

Helen Edwards Utz

Only child of Laura and Arthur Edwards. She married Paul Utz and lived in an old Victorian house in Pittsford near the Barge Canal. She had a son Paul and daughters Geraldine, "Gerry," and Josephine "Josie."

Wilson Kirker

Son of Ben and Nettie. He died around 1949 and had daughters. His daughter Barbara once stopped to visit at the cottage.

Orfa Kirker Wilder Grosvenor

Daughter of Ben and Nettie. She married William "Billy" Wilder, who was a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was killed in a plane crash during WWII. They had a son William, Jr. who is a retired career officer in the US Air Force. After Billy’s death, Orfa married John Grosvenor and lived near Syracuse, NY (Fayetteville). John and Orfa had a daughter Susan.

Robert Kirker Cross

My Grandfather. Only child of William and Margaret. Robert was born in 1919, he was considerably younger than his cousins. Bob Cross married Eva Alma Suits and had two sons.

Janet Goodhue

Daughter of Bert and Effie. She was a teacher. She was never married and died as a young woman of spinal meningitis.

Laura Goodhue Beach

Daughter of Bert and Effie. Her husband’s name was Neil Beach. According to one deed she lived in Montreal, but she also lived in Rochester and Florida.

Raymond K. Goodhue

Son of Bert and Effie. He attended Syracuse University and his wife’s name was Janet (not to be confused with his sister of the similar name). An old deed states his residence as Akron, Ohio, but he subsequently moved and raised a family in Maine.
